This article examines the main trends in the diversification of the global food system. It is substantiated that in the period of dynamically developed and globalized world economy the necessity of diversification in the food complex of Bulgaria is required in order to achieve independence from food crises, from the risks of environmental uncertainty, from changes in consumer preferences. The latter are at the heart of changes in the agricultural sector and provoke the principle of “from farm to fork”. This is also the basis of the transformation of the whole food system. Along with the characteristics of conventional agriculture and its significant differences with organic farming, this study presents the need for advancement in technology, which is related to the sector's biologicalisation. This is not only a new scientific area, but also a prospect for development in line with the changes in the food complex.
