IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON FOREST ECOSYSTEMS IN BULGARIA

Lubcho Trichkov, Valentina Marinova

Abstract

In recent years, no one has doubted climate change and the presence of so-called global warming. The main reasons for this are known, as well as the fact that climate change is expressed not only in a gradual rise in temperatures, but also in a series of extreme climatic phenomena - hot flashes, prolonged periods of drought and intense rainfall in atypical periods and more. At the end of 2019, the „European Green Deal“ was announced, setting climate targets by 2050 so that Europe could become the first continent to achieve carbon neutrality. These are long-term measures and initiatives that review all the instruments of the European Union (EU) and include 50 specific policy initiatives. Agriculture and forests are particularly important sectors directly impacted by climate change. Forests are a major sink of carbon dioxide (CO2) and, in general, of greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change. In this report, we will look at the impact of climate change on the state of forest ecosystems, now and in the near future, as well as the measures that are being taken or need to be taken to adapt forests to climate change. The main national strategy papers on climate and forests regulate priorities, measures and actions related to maintaining good status of forest ecosystems, which will help to mitigate the effects of climate change. Based on the targeted review of these key strategic and programmatic documents in their part on the impact of climate change on forests to reduce their negative impact, and on the adaptation of forests themselves to climate change, some specific effects of these changes on the elements have been identified from forest ecosystems and relevant, conclusions and suggestions are made.
