ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES: NEW CHALLENGES

Ivaylo Dagnev

Abstract

The article problematizes the issue of English for specific purposes and, in particular, its variety, English for academic purposes in the light of new trends in foreign language learning. A relatively extensive review of specialized English language learning is made, as well as the topic of new innovative approaches in foreign language learning - problem-based and project-based learning is under scrutiny. The purpose of the research, illuminated by the article, is the analysis of an experiment conducted with two groups of students from the Medical College in the city of Plovdiv. One group serves as a control, and the experiment, which is the essence of the development, is conducted in the other group. The focus of the analysis is the learning methodology, which includes innovative elements of project-based learning. Significantly higher results were found from the students of the experimental group, who confirmed their positive opinion of the conducted training in a survey.
