ASSESSING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF VIDEO LESSONS IN LEARNING SPECIALIZED VOCABULARY IN ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES

Ivaylo Dagnev

Abstract

The incorporation of technology into English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has notably revolutionized vocabulary learning, introducing advanced techniques that improve educational outcomes. Research has demonstrated the efficacy of digital resources, including chatbots, virtual reality (VR), mobile applications, and video comprehension tools, in aiding the acquisition of specialized terminology crucial for various disciplines. This study examines the influence of video comprehension activities on student motivation and performance in ESP courses at the Medical College of the Medical University – Plovdiv. Over two academic years, 2022/2023 and 2023/2024, four student groups participated in an experiment utilizing YouTube video content to enhance their understanding of medical vocabulary. In each respective year, two groups acted as control groups while the other two engaged in the experimental approach. The evaluation included a questionnaire for the experimental groups and an analysis of vocabulary test results. Findings from the questionnaire indicated overall student satisfaction with the experimental methods. While the study does not claim statistical significance, it highlights key aspects of the acceptance of innovative learning strategies, aligning with similar research conducted internationally.
