CULTURAL HERITAGE OF MYKOLAIV IN THE CONTEXT OF WAR DESTRUCTION: PRESERVATION AND POPULARIZATION
Abstract
Founded in 1789 as a shipbuilding center, Mykolaiv is an important cultural and tourist center in southern Ukraine. Throughout its history, the city has gradually built up a rich tourist potential, which included architectural monuments, museums, theaters, and other cultural sites. However, Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 caused significant damage to the city's tourist infrastructure. Intense shelling damaged or destroyed more than 45 cultural sites, including 20 architectural monuments, seven museums, theaters, a zoo, and historic buildings.
Among the most affected sites is the Snihurivka Museum of History and Local Lore, whose building was partially destroyed and 40% of the museum's collection was lost. The city's Korabelny Palace of Culture suffered significant damage, with 80% of its building damaged. In addition, the Mykolaiv Zoo came under shelling, which posed a threat to animals and employees, but it continues to operate. Architectural monuments, such as the Staroflotsky Barracks and theater buildings, were also damaged. The destruction of these objects not only affected the tourist potential, but also dealt a blow to the national cultural heritage.
Despite the difficult situation, the community of Mykolaiv, together with the local authorities, is actively working to preserve cultural heritage. Restoration work, evacuation of valuable exhibits and digitalization of museum collections are underway. The involvement of international organizations such as UNESCO helps restore damaged sites. Digital technologies make it possible to create virtual exhibitions and archives that ensure the preservation of cultural property during the war.
The study of the destruction of architectural monuments and the prospects for their restoration is important for preserving national identity, maintaining public morale, and creating the basis for tourism development in the post-war period. This study highlights the extent of damage to tourist sites in Mykolaiv, problems of tourist infrastructure, heritage preservation measures, and prospects for its revival. Particular attention is paid to the impact of the war on the city's architectural structures and their role in the future recovery of the tourism sector.
